Applying the initial tension to a conductor during the stringing of overhead transmission lines plays a critical role in ensuring network safety and reliability throughout its service life. Improper initial tension can lead to excessive conductor tension at low temperatures or increase the risk of excessive sag at high temperatures. In this paper, a data-driven method and algorithm are proposed to determine the allowable region for conductor initial tension. The method establishes the initial tension range by accounting for potential errors in data acquisition, modeling, calculations, and stringing execution. Furthermore, an algorithm is presented for linearizing the nonlinear relationship between conductor tension and ambient temperature. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed method determines the allowable region with high accuracy, such that the conductor tension and sag remain within permissible limits across all operating temperatures. Additionally, the results confirm the capability of accurately transforming the nonlinear tension–temperature relationship into a linear equation. A sensitivity analysis on span length reveals that the size of the allowable region is highly influenced by span length variations, such that increasing the span beyond a certain threshold leads to the complete disappearance of the allowable stringing region. This approach provides an effective tool for design and site engineers to locally control the initial tension in projects, without the need for complex software.
