This paper investigates the enhancement of gain limit and improvement of the efficiency of optical transimpedance amplifiers using fourth-order Butterworth filters for the regulated cascode with shunt feedback (RGC-SF) structure. Transimpedance amplifiers play a key role in optical receivers, and improving their performance can significantly affect the efficiency and accuracy of optical systems. In most previous studies, simultaneous optimization of gain and bandwidth in CMOS structures especially using higher-order filters has been limited due to the trade-off between these two characteristics in optical receivers. In this study, by employing fourth-order Butterworth filters, the gain is improved over a specific bandwidth. The results show that using these filters can enhance the gain limit and overall efficiency of optical receivers. In this paper, a transimpedance amplifier has been designed using 60nm CMOS TSMC technology and a fourth-order Butterworth filter, achieving a gain of 71 dB and a bandwidth of approximately 5.5 GHz. The power consumption is 4.7 mW, while the equivalent input-referred noise is about 1.22 µA
