With the increasing utilization of microgrids (MG) and distributed generation (DG) units, the issue of their control—particularly the optimal exploitation of available resources—has garnered significant attention. Moreover, the presence of energy storage systems, aimed at utilizing stored energy and enabling energy storage during critical periods, further underlines the necessity of employing an appropriate control strategy for the optimal management of these resources. This paper proposes a hierarchical control scheme for DGs operating in AC microgrids, which is based on a primary droop control layer and a secondary control layer employing an extended centralized optimal power flow (EOPF) method. The centralized controller, based on the received data, is responsible for computing and transmitting control references to the primary control layer using power flow equations and the battery energy storage system (BEES) model, in order to achieve objectives such as optimization, voltage regulation, and reactive power sharing. The considered cluster-based microgrid (MGC) consists of two AC microgrids along with an energy storage source. The proposed method has been implemented and simulated in the MATLAB/SIMULINK environment with custom coding in the m-file framework. The obtained results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method in optimizing the operation of DG and BEES resources.
